Editorial: Obama steps outside of his job description; gets it half right

Our View: The government should have no role in picking winners and losers.

In 2010, President Obama, Tipton County officials, and hosts of other leaders wagered taxpayer dollars on the future success of Abound Solar. In exchange for the promise of increased production capabilities and sorely needed jobs in Colorado and Indiana, Abound was granted a $400 Million loan guarantee under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Obama used the stimulus money to support these companies in an effort to make them winners.

Thursday, Abound announced it would declare bankruptcy and close its doors.

This gamble was like many others the Obama administration made, including the Solyndra disaster that offered $527 million in loan guarantees to the now failed California company.

In two years, we have gone from seeing happy faces at presidential photo-ops to faceless press releases reporting bankruptcies and plant closures. U.S. Solar firm officials blame competition from Chinese manufacturers for their failure to turn a profit. Undoubtedly, no one at Abound or Solyndra was banging this drum as they spent thousands of dollars lobbying federal officials to secure taxpayer money. Likewise, no public officials were acknowledging this fact when they committed funds to these companies.

Why is that? We suspect it boils down to disrespect. American taxpayers have been disrespected in both of these cases.

Politicians were perfectly willing to commit millions of dollars of public money to these unprofitable companies because they knew they'd get a portion of it back in their own pockets in the form of lobbyist money and campaign donations. President Obama himself has accepted nearly $100,000 in campaign donations and contributions to his inauguration fund.

Classic crony politics is exactly the reason why we suggest that it should not be government's job to pick winners and losers. Government should stick to creating conditions that support success for any company that U.S. consumers determine can provide value for the dollars they spend. Instead, government has done just the opposite.

In providing taxpayer dollars to companies like Abound, Obama has stepped outside of his job description and tried to pick winners and losers.

The trouble is, he only does half the job. Obama keeps picking losers.

This time, he's made Tipton County a loser too.

Joe Donnelly is Ineffective for Indiana

Editorial

Democrat Indiana Senate Nominee Joe Donnelly faces a tough political problem. The more he talks about how conservative he is (to impress Hoosier voters), the more apparent it becomes how ineffective he is as a legislator for our state.

Donnelly has tried to distance himself from the Democratic party time and time again in his talking points. He's desparate to show Hoosier voters that he's not one of Obama\Pelosi's waterboys (even though he voted for Obamacare, cash for clunkers, automaker bailouts, and a myriad of other fiascos.) He talks a lot about voting against spending increases and the need to focus on jobs. In doing this, he hopes to appeal to centrist Hoosier voters. In our view though, all Donnelly is doing is highlighting his failures to make a difference for Hoosier families.

In the past, Donnelly has taken on the Obama administration and made his position clear: Jobs should be the focus.

"I hope the President focuses on the most pressing concern of Hoosier families: jobs" said Congressman Donnelly. "We need to get folks back to work, and smart investments like tax credits for our small businesses to buy new equipment and hire more workers will help. I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make sure we're putting American workers first."

Donnelly takes a stand on spending too, saying the Obama should find "ways we can protect the fiscal future of our country."

"Washington has waited too long to take common-sense steps to reduce spending and shrink the deficit. I support common-sense reforms like the proposed freeze on discretionary spending for federal agencies."

You'd think that Joe was speaking at a Teaparty, And he'd do well to stop there.

But he doesn't.

As a matter of fact, everytime he talks about how fiscally conservative or pro-jobs he is, Donnelly tells Hoosiers exactly why they should choose the Repubican Candidate, Richard Mourdock:

Because no matter how in tune with Indiana voters Joe Donnelly may be, he is ineffective in influencing his fellow democrats to do what both he and his Republican opponent says is best for Indiana and America: reducing the deficit and creating jobs.

In a campaign for his seat in 2010, Donnelly bragged "In fact, each year I have been in office, I have voted against a budget because I thought the proposed increases in spending were too high. While a flat-funded budget won't by itself get our budget back into balance, it is a sensible place to start."

Each year Donnelly's Democrats were in control of budgeting, spending increased in spite of his vote against it. Spending is still out of control and Unemployment is still above 8% nationally. So much for Joe's conservative campaign rhetoric.

Joe Donnelly is ineffective for Hoosier families. He talks of conservative values during campaigns, but the results speak for themselves. Sending Joe to Washington as our Senator, we can expect him to carry the water for Harry Reid when necessary. Sending Joe Donnelly to Washington, we're throwing conservative hoosier values out the window. His colleagues don't listen to him.

Ineffective for Hoosier families. That is the Joe Donnelly record.

Editorial: A Call for Civil Rights for all Americans

Our View: Human Life is Sacred, And Should Be Protected Everywhere; At Every Stage

Our nation’s history has been marred by instances of cruel human rights abuses to segments of the population, according to many Americans. Others will say that our country has always been at the forefront of extending these rights to new groups, and stands as a leader in enhancing liberties here and abroad.

While neither group accepts the views of the other as legitimate, both groups are correct, of course.
